WP TwitterSearch

Description

Displays the latest results based on a twitter search. Options include setting multiple search terms and limiting tweets shown. Use the sidebar widget or shortcode in your posts/pages: [wpts terms=twittersearch limit=5 lang=en]

Installation

  1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  2. Add the WP-TwitterSearch Widget or use the shortcode in posts/pages: [wpts terms=twittersearch limit=5 lang=en]
  3. See the TwitterSearch menu for options.

Faq

I get this error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: simplexml_load_file()

WP-TwitterSearch requires PHP5 and that error means your using PHP4. I have no plans to make it work with PHP4. You can contact your host for more info about your server supporting PHP5.

Where is the widget?

As of v1.1 you can now use the sidebar widget to display the twittersearch feed. This is currently limited to one widget and can have its own search terms and limit. The next release will support multiple widgets with independent options.

How do I display my latest tweet?

There are a ton of great plugins that display your tweets, there was no need to create another. This plugin is for search.twitter.com only.

Do I have to provide credit when using the plugin?

Nope, you are free to use it however you like no credit needed. However, if you wish to provide a link back to this plugin there is an option to enable credit. This defaults to no, but if switched to yes a ‘powered by’ will show up below the plugin on your site. Again, this is default to no.

I have another question!

Good, you can either email me at james.fleeting[at]gmail.com or post in the wordpress forums. I’m always browsing around.

Future Plans

  1. Add the remaining Twitter Advanced Search options
  2. Allow for multiple widgets each with its own options
  3. Location based search (input a zip code and distance)
  4. Add a button to the Visual Editor to add a shortcode
  5. Display results from a username and tags from a post
  6. Cache the result for a period of time?
  7. Should the tweets display in an unordered list? divs/spans? Should you be able to choose?

WP PicLens

October 30th, 2009 No comments

Table of contents

Description

The PicLens Plugin for WordPress makes it easy for you to provide your visitors with an immersive slideshow experience for rich media on your blog.

Visitors simply click a “start slideshow” link you place in your blog entry, and a slick slideshow interface will instantly appear with your images. From there, visitors can play or pause your slideshow, or better yet delve into a full-screen experience that goes beyond the confines of the browser window.

Optionally, you can also enable our sidebar widget to display a mini slideshow of images from throughout your blog.

Installation

  1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
  2. Set your options in the ‘Settings’ -> ‘PicLens’ menu in WordPress.
  3. Setup the PicLens Slideshow Widget in ‘Presentation’ -> ‘Widgets’ menu in WordPress.

Faq

What is the difference between the plugin and the widget?

The PicLens plugin lets you create immersive slideshows to appear within any blog entry, using images from any server. The PicLens widget, on the other hand, creates a mini display in your sidebar, and loops images from your entire blog.

What do my site visitors need to do to enjoy my immersive slideshows?

It’s as easy as clicking a “start slideshow” button you place into your blog. To enjoy the full features of your presentation, your visitors must have Adobe Flash Player v.9.0.28 or higher, or our free PicLens browser add-on.

Can I use the PicLens plugin and widget on a blog hosted at WordPress.com, i.e. myblog.wordpress.com?

Not yet, since blogs hosted on WordPress.com do not support plugins. Our plugin and widget work only on WordPress blogs hosted on your own domain and server at this time.

Can I add audio or video?

Currently, audio and video works only on PicLens Lite installed on websites. The audio on/off button on the PicLens Lite console is not yet functional with this plugin.

Why does WP PicLens require at least PHP verison 5?

PHP 5 supports libxml functions which the plugin uses to create the Media RSS feed. PHP 4 at the time of writing this plugin has reached its end of life and will no longer be supported by the PHP development team.

I got a Fatal PHP error when I activated the plugin, how do I fix it?

Make sure you are using php version 5, to remove the plugin, simply delete the wp-piclens folder.

Skype Online Status

October 30th, 2009 No comments

Table of contents

Description

The plugin Skype Online Status allows you to add one or multiple, highly customizable and accessible (!) Skype buttons to your blog. You can pick any of the available Skype button themes that will show your online status and place them in your pages and posts content (with a neat little Skype quicktag button in the WYSIWYG editor), in your sidebar via widgets (unlimited number) or anywhere in your theme template files.

The Skype Status admin page and Skype Widget options are adequately annotated but there is also a Quick Guide section with lots of information on all the possible ways to get you blog Skyped. If you still cannot get it working the way you want to, find a Skype link to the developer on the Notes & Live Support section.

Button themes are mostly based on the themes you can find on Skype’s button wizard page but more feature rich, like showing your online status in the alt text of the image, more accessible (!) and much more customizable, like setting your own Status texts in your blogs language. Even a button to invoke normal phone calls or multichats or conference calls is possible!

Installation

  1. Activate plugin on the ‘Plugins’ page
  2. Configure (or update) your SkypeID and settings on the ‘Options’ > ‘Skype Status’ page
  3. Activate the widget or put the quicktag in your posts to display the Skype button on your blog pages.

Read more on usage in the Quick Guide section of the Options > Skype Status page, available after installation.

Faq

Why is my Skype button showing Offline even when I am online?

First, you have to change an option in your Skype client settings to make your online status publicly visible:

  1. Open your Skype client and go to ‘Options > Privacy’ or ‘Advanced’ (depending on your client version).
  2. Find the option ‘Allow my status to be shown on the web’ and place a checkmark beside it.
  3. Close the Options window and change your Skype status to Offline and back Online again to update the Skype server.

If your online status is still incorrect, type in your webbrowser http://mystatus.skype.com/yourskypename and check what is shown there. The plugin takes your status directly from the Skype server and should correspond with your status shown on the above URL (using your skype name obviously). If your status is not correct on that URL, it basically is out of your hands. You can wait for the Skype server to get ‘up to date’ or browse the Skype forums for fixes suggested by others…

I have found a bug. Where do I report it?

For bug reports, go to Skype Online Status Google Group and describe what is happening there. Please provide as much related info as you can but at least give me your plugin and Wordpress version number.

I have a feature request. Where do I ask?

For all ‘normal’ feature requests go to Skype Online Status Google Group but if you want custom development, please contact me directly. I will gladly consider any proposal. You can find my Skype ID on the Notes & Live Support section of your WordPress ‘Options’ > ‘Skype Status’ page, available after installation. Or browse to my website 4Visions.

I have trouble setting up a Skype button on my blog. Where do I get help?

Have you read the Quick Guide section of your WordPress ‘Options’ > ‘Skype Status’ page, available after installation already? For all remaining questions, go to Skype Online Status Google Group and post them there. I will be happy to respond in due time :)

I would like to contribute. Is that possible?

Of course! What did you have in mind? Monetary funding is always appreciated but if you can help me out in development, that’s cool too :) Right now, translation (.mo) files are MORE then welcome! Read translation instructions (also included in the latest package) for more info.

Any small donation via PayPal to keep me developing is VERY welcome. Thanks!

Read more on usage in the Quick Guide section of your WordPress ‘Options’ > ‘Skype Status’ page, available after installation.

What’s New

Since version 1.1 there have been some major changes to the layout of the ‘Options’ > ‘Skype Status’ page. Documentation has been much extended.

And some new features:

  • internationalization
  • widgetized!
  • lots of new templates
  • some new tags for the template files,
  • a ‘Reset options’ button to revert to original settings and a ‘Remove’ button to completely clear the plugin settings from your database
  • a quicktag to display a Skype Status button in posts and page content!
  • editable template
  • language switch for Skype default status texts
  • download skype now link (replaceable with your own referral link since version 2.6)

Since version 2.6.3 there are unlimited customizable Skype Status Widgets available :) Since version 2.6.4 there is internationalization… Anyone who wants to contribute, please consider doing a translation :)

Notes

This plugin has grown a lot since the start but it should be mentioned that it was built upon the neat little plugin Skype Button v2.01 by Anti Veeranna. Many thanks!

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.

Wish List

For version 3 and beyond :)

  • More translations! Read translation instructions (also included in the latest package) for more info.
  • Skypecasts widgets !
  • Skype-like button theme wizard…
  • Upload your own button/template file
  • integration with WP user system (skype field on the Profile page, ++)
  • Get XML online status (and local time?)

Bugs

Please report anything you find on Skype Online Status Google Group. Provide as much related info as you can, so we can reproduce the error… And fix it :)

Known issues

  • The javascript provided by Skype that detects whether Skype is installed (client side), does not work properly on Linux. It defaults to displaying a download popup even if Skype is installed on the visitors computer after the Skype button is clicked. Hopefully, Skype will fix this some day :/

Search Unleashed

October 30th, 2009 No comments

Table of contents

Description

Extends the standard WordPress search to include data from posts, pages, comments, and meta-data, as well as the full content of data inserted by plugins. This last feature makes it unique amongst search plugins. For example, you may have a plugin that uses shortcodes to insert data:

[product 1]

The standard search will just see the shortcode. Search Unleashed will see the actual data inserted into your post.

Search phrases are highlighted, as are incoming searches from Google, Yahoo, and most other search engines. This makes it very easy to see exactly what phrase matched and why the post is being shown.

Searches can be restricted to specific categories, tags, or meta-data. For example, you can search for ‘persian’ in the ‘cats’ category.

  • Transparently extends WordPress search with a full text search that supports wildcards and logical operations
  • Search through posts, pages, comments, meta-data, urls, and titles
  • Priority based searching – configure how much priority to give to the various parts of a post
  • Extendable search engines. Comes with three search engines (standard, MySQL fulltext, and Lucene)
  • Data from plugins is included in the search – this is very important as previously any plugins that inserted data into posts were not included in searches
  • Everything can be configured – select exactly what data you want to search
  • Smart highlighting that shows a contextual snapshot of the search data
  • Incoming search highlight. Searches made through Google, Yahoo, Altavista, Baidu, Sogou, and MSN are all highlighted
  • No changes are made to standard WordPress database tables
  • Advanced search widget

The plugin is available in: * English * Deutsch by Frank Bueltge, Gerhard Lehnhoff, and Andre * Swedish by Olle Hellgren * Russian by Lecactus * Italiano by Dario * Dutch by Evert * French by Vincent Granger * Polish by Krzysztof Kowalik * Spanish by Ivan Garcia * Turkish by Mehmet Karac * Japanese by Hiroaki Miyashita * Chinese by Yunfang Shang * Brazillian Portuguese by Joao Miguel * Danish by Georg S. Adamsen * Lithuanian by WordPress TVS – Audrius * Belorussian by Marcis Gasuns * Czech

Installation

  1. Go to the plugin management page and enable the plugin
  2. Configure the plugin from Manage/Search Unleashed

You can find full details of installing a plugin on the plugin installation page.

Faq

How does this work?

An index is made of all appropriate data, including the output from any plugins. Typically this does not occur as the standard WordPress search is made against raw data, as opposed to data that has been processed by plugins.

Only relevant data is included in the index to keep the index as small and fast as possible.

The index is updated anytime a post is edited.

If you’d like to participate in the plugin development feel free to contact me, I’ll be glad to share some thoughts and guide you into the current development stage..

And YES, I do consider feature requests, and that is what makes this plugin work. The discussions are here: Quick Flickr Widget

Oh, and a big shout out to Donncha O Caoimh for his Flickr Widget. Thanks mate!

Installation

  1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  2. Check out your sidebar widgets configuration

Faq

PHP or JavaScript?

If you haven’t got any problems with PHP, then use PHP. JavaScript is for those who have hosting issues disallowing them the usage of the filegetcontents function.

I entered my username but the Flickr images aren’t showing up!

Okay. Let’s start off by saying that it’s not your Flickr username that I need (unless you’re using an RSS feed, in which case go ahead and bug me). And it’s not your Yahoo ID! It’s your Flickr screen name (in the Your Account section). Next. Make sure that safe_mode is turned off on your hosting account, cause as far as I know, that disables cross-domain usage, and the only way out is to use javascript or frames, which is rediculous. Now, if that didn’t help, then feel free to bug me on this page: Quick Flickr Widget ;) Cheers!

Screenshots

This is the widget configuration options. As you can see it’s HTML is fully customizable!

This is the output from my Flickr RSS feed in middle size.

Here’s a screenshot of how it look swith the standard wordpress theme and small-sized flickr photos.

Oh. Did I mention that you can switch on the Thickbox effects? ;)

    Google News

    October 29th, 2009 No comments

    Table of contents

    Description

Google aggregates news from over 4500 news sources, updated continously. The results can be retrieved as a number of RSS feeds, where you can create your own specific feed by specifying one of more than 40 regions/languages, and an optional topic ranging from Domestic to Most Popular to Entertainment. Currently there are nine topics, including, of course, All. In addition to this, any feed can be filtered through a search query so that only news items matching your query will be shown. Note that not all combinations of region/language and topic has been enabled by Google but it should degrade gracefully.

This plugin works both as a widget, as inline content replacement and can be called from themes. Any number of inline replacements or theme calls allowed, but only one widget instance is supported in this release.

For widget use, simply use the widget as any other after selecting which feed it should display. For inline content replacement, insert the one or more of the following strings in your content and they will be replaced by the relevant news feed.

    • [google-news] for the default feed
    • [google-news name=”feedname”]

Enable plugin, go to the Google News page under ‘Dashboard’ -> ‘Settings’ and read the initial information. Then go to the Google News page under ‘Dashboard’ -> ‘Manage’ and configure one or more feeds. Then use a widget or insert relevant strings in your content or theme.

    Additional information

The available options are as follows.

    • Name: Optional feed name, that can be used in the widget or the inline replacement string to reference a specific feed. Any feed without a name is considered “default” and will be used if the replacement strings do not reference a specific feed. If there are more than one feed with the same name, a random of these is picked every time it is used. This also applies to the default feed(s).
    • Title: Optional, which when set will be used in the widget title or as a header above the news items when inline. If the title is empty, then a default title of “Google News : <region> : <feed type>” is used. Note that as per Google Terms of Service it is a requirement to state that the news come from Google.
    • News region: A dropdown list of 40 choices, determining the region/language of the feed.
    • News type: Another dropdown list, determining what type of news you are after. Sci/Tech, Business, Health etc.
    • Output type: Some Google feeds come with just text, some pictures or pictures on nearly every news item. Chose which one you want here.
    • News item length: Short or long. The short version is really just the news item title as a one liner but probably the one most WP admins will use. The long version is a 3-4 line teaser that has been severely stripped of useless markup that Google insists on passing along, including tables, links, colour/font/style settings etc. I’ve tried to clean it up so it won’t mess up your theme. For the short version, the long text without html tags is available as a mouse rollover/tooltip.
    • Max items to show: As the title says, if the feed has sufficient entries to fulfil the request.
    • Optional query filter: One of the most important parts of the Google News RSS Feed is the ability to filter the news with your very own search query. Get relevant, up to date news on the exact topic you want. Note that if you add a search query, then the short item length will include an “all N news articles” link curtesy Google. If you choose to add a query, then you most likely want to set a title as well. To explain to the viewer what kind of news you have selected for them to see. The News Query isn’t like a standard Google Query, so you can’t use || between words to search for one or the other. So IF you start your query with the word OR then the rest of the words will be or’ed together. I.e. a query string of ‘OR this that’ will look for news containing either this or that. This is really just a test, so the actual query language used here may change in future versions.
    • Cache time: The feeds are now fetched using WordPress builtin MagpieRSS system, which allows for caching of feeds a specific number of seconds. Cached feeds are stored in the backend database.

Clicking on a news item will of course take you via Google to the news site with the relevant article, as per Google Terms of Use.

If you want to change the look&feel, the inline table is wrapped in a div with the id “google-news-inline” and the widget is wrapped in an li with id “google-news”. Let me know if you need more to properly skin it.

    Installation & Settings

    1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Dashboard’ -> ‘Plugins’ admin menu.
    2. See configuation pages under ‘Dashboard’ -> ‘Settings’, ‘Dashboard’ -> ‘Tools’ and on the widget page.

Note if you’re upgrading from a previous release, there may be some strangeness the first time you edit an old feed. Try again and it will work. Or delete the feed and create again, guaranteed fix. :-)

Learn more by visiting this page: http://www.nothing2hide.net/global-translator-pro/

    Installation

    1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
    2. From the main menu choose “Options -> Global Translator” and select your blog language and your preferred configuration options then select “Update Options”.

    Faq

The full translation process takes a lot of time. Why?
In order to prevent from banning by the translation services, only a translation request every 5 minutes will be allowed. This will permit to fully translate your blog whithout any interruption; this message will completely disappear when all the pages of your blog will be cached. Remember that this message will also appear if you’re currently being banned by the translation engine: this could happen if for example your blog shares the same ip address with other blogs using older versions of Global Translator.

“This page has not been translated yet. The translation process could take a while: please come back later.” message when trying to access a translated page
Upgrade to 1.0.8 or later. Starting from 1.0.8, a browser asking for a not yet translated page will be warned and redirected in 5 seconds to the translation service page in order to provide a temporary “backup translation service”. Obviously, when the page is translated and saved on your cache directory, this redirection will disappear and the translated and cleaned page will be served by your blog.

White page or Page Not Found (404) when clicking on a translation flag
This could be due to a change of the permalinks structure of your blog, to a conflict with another plugin or to a custom .htaccess file which doesn’t permit Global Translator to add its custom permalink rules. Try to refresh the Global Translator rewrite rules just pressing the “Update Options” button from the Global Translator admin page. If the problem persists, try also to deactivate all the other existing plugins and check your .htaccess file and comment out all the non-standard rewrite rules. If you discover a conflicting plugin please send me an email (davide at nothing2hide.net).

“Sorry, the translation engine is temporarily not available. Please try again later” message when using Google Translations engine
You’re using an old version of the plugin. Please upgrade to 1.0 or later.

The translated page has a bad/broken layout
This is due to the translation engine action. I cannot do anything in order to prevent this problem :-) I suggest you to try all the translation engines in order to choose the best one for your blog layout

I’ve just changed my permalinks structure or just upgraded Wordpress to a newer version and Global Translator doesn’t translate anymore
Everytime the permalinks structure of your blog changes, the custom rules previously added by Global Translator are overriden. To solve the problem you must just refresh the Global Translator Options (“Update Options” button) on the administrative area.

I’ve removed one or more available translations but the search engines continue to try to index the corresponding urls
When you remove one or more translations, the plugin will begin to return a 404 Not Found for all the corresponding translated pages. In order to notify a search engine that one or more urls are not available anymore you should add a deny rule on your robots.txt file. For example if you decide to remove the German translation you should modify your robots.txt as follows: User-agent: * [....] Disallow: /de/*

How can I discover if my blog is currently banned by the translation engine?
Go to the Global Translator admin page. If your blog has been temporarily banned, a warning message will appear inside the “Translation engine connection” section.

    Configuration

If your theme is widged-enabled, just choose “Presentation->Widgets” from the administration main menu and drag the “Global translator” widget on the preferred position on your sidebar.

After this simple operation, a bar containing the flags that represents all the available translations for your language will appear on your blog.

    Advertising Manager

    Description

This plugin will manage and rotate your Google Adsense and other ads on your Wordpress blog. It automatically recognises many ad networks including Google Adsense, AdBrite, Adify, AdGridWork, Adpinion, Adroll, Chitika, Commission Junction, CrispAds, OpenX, ShoppingAds, Yahoo!PN, and WidgetBucks. Unsupported ad networks can be used as well.

    Features:

    • Import ad code automatically
    • Widgets and sidebar modules compatible (as used in the popular K2 theme).
    • Automatic limiting of ad display to meet network terms and conditions (e.g. Google Adsense 3 units/page)

This addon is available as a subscription from our Products Page.

    Usage & Settings

    • Add your ad networks by clicking ‘Create new’ under the ‘Ads’ menu. Manage your ad networks by clicking ‘Edit’ under the ‘Ads’ menu.
    • Place ads in your blog posts and pages by adding ‘‘ to your blog post (where ‘name’ is the name of your ad)

More detailed installation instructions can be found here.

    Faq

I previously used the Adsense Manager plugin for Wordpress. Do I need to reconfigure my ads?
Advertising Manager will automatically import your settings from Adsense Manager. There is no modification necessary. In addition, Advertising Manager will accept the Adsense Manager ad calls (”) as well.

Does Advertising Manager support Wordpress MU (multi-user)?
    Yes.

Can Advertising Manager work in my language?
Yes. Advertising Manager is localised. If your blog is in another language, and Advertising Manager shows in English, then it is most likely that a translation has not been done. Don’t worry – if you are a native speaker in English as well as your local language, you can help out! Information on how to get involved can be found here:

    http://code.openx.org/wiki/advertising-manager/TranslateAdvertisingManagerinyour_language

Do I still need Advertising Manager now I can manage ads through Google’s system?
Advertising manager allows you to rotate ads, easily turn on/off ads, place them in your blog, and many features other than configuration of the ad colors and format. It a critical tool to use if you want to make more from your advertising.

Why does changing Ad Format/Dimensions sometimes not change the size of the ad?
For some ad networks (e.g. WidgetBucks, Adroll, etc.) the dimensions of ads are managed through the online interface. There is no way to change these settings from within the WordPress system that would work reliably. You do not have to update these dimension settings if you update your Ad online, however, it can be useful in correctly identifying ‘Alternate Ads’ for AdSense blocks.

How can I share revenue with my authors?

    1. Load YOUR ad into Advertising Manager.
    2. Load your AUTHOR’s ad into Advertising Manager.
    3. Name both ads the same – this will allow them to rotate.
    4. In your author’s ad, be sure to select the authors username in Display Options
    5. Set the weights of the ads according to your revenue share. The easiest way to do this is to set YOUR ad weight to 36, and then set the weight of your author’s ad according to the revenue share deal. For 10% revenue share, set the author ad weight to 4; 20% = 9; 33% = 18; 40% = 24; 50% = 36; 60% = 54; 66.7% = 72; 70% = 84; 80% = 144; 90% = 324. For the nerdy wonks out there, the formula is (AUTHOR AD WEIGHT) = (MY AD WEIGHT * REVENUE SHARE) / (1 – REVENUE SHARE)

    Settings

Go to ‘Appearance’ -> ‘Widgets’ from your Dashboard menu and drag the Twitter Widget Pro widget onto your sidebar.

    Faq

Can I use more than one instance of this widget?
Yes, Twitter Widget Pro employs the multi-widget pattern, which allows you to not only have more than one instance of this widget on your site, but even allows more than one instance of this widget in a single sidebar.

Can I follow more than one feed?
Absolutely, each instance of the widget can have different settings and track different feeds.

Why can’t I display a friends feed anymore?
Aparently the database queries required to display the friends feed was causing twitter to crash, so they removed it. Unfortunately, this is outside my control.

    Screenshots

To use the widget, go to Appearance -> Widgets and Add “Twitter Widget Pro” widget.

Each widget has settings that need to be set, so the next step is to click “edit” on the newly added widget and adjust all the settings. When you’re done click “Save Changes”

This is what the widget looks like in the default theme with no added styles.

By using some (X)HTML in the title element and adding a few styles and a background image, you could make it look like this.

    Description

Adds a tell a friend, Share/Bookmark/Email/Social Bookmarking button in a widget position. The service which is used is freetellafriend.com which supports e-mail address book, social bookmarks and favorites.

    A bit about freetellafriend.com:

FreeTellaFriend is a free service to allow your visitors to share your website with their friends. The idea is simple; you place a ‘tell a friend’ button on your website, and when your visitor decides to tell their friend about your website, they click this button which then presents them with a straightforward form to e-mail their friends.

The great addition to FreeTellaFriend is your visitor can enter their e-mail username and password (we support major e-mail providers) and our system will automatically retrieve their contact list. Thereafter they can choose who to e-mail the website to. If one user decides to e-mail all their contacts, your website will be exposed to over 50 friends (on average).

The following is supported: Tell a Friend, Social Bookmarking and Add to Favorites.
