WP PicLens

October 30th, 2009 No comments

Table of contents

Description

The PicLens Plugin for WordPress makes it easy for you to provide your visitors with an immersive slideshow experience for rich media on your blog.

Visitors simply click a “start slideshow” link you place in your blog entry, and a slick slideshow interface will instantly appear with your images. From there, visitors can play or pause your slideshow, or better yet delve into a full-screen experience that goes beyond the confines of the browser window.

Optionally, you can also enable our sidebar widget to display a mini slideshow of images from throughout your blog.

Installation

  1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
  2. Set your options in the ‘Settings’ -> ‘PicLens’ menu in WordPress.
  3. Setup the PicLens Slideshow Widget in ‘Presentation’ -> ‘Widgets’ menu in WordPress.

Faq

What is the difference between the plugin and the widget?

The PicLens plugin lets you create immersive slideshows to appear within any blog entry, using images from any server. The PicLens widget, on the other hand, creates a mini display in your sidebar, and loops images from your entire blog.

What do my site visitors need to do to enjoy my immersive slideshows?

It’s as easy as clicking a “start slideshow” button you place into your blog. To enjoy the full features of your presentation, your visitors must have Adobe Flash Player v.9.0.28 or higher, or our free PicLens browser add-on.

Can I use the PicLens plugin and widget on a blog hosted at WordPress.com, i.e. myblog.wordpress.com?

Not yet, since blogs hosted on WordPress.com do not support plugins. Our plugin and widget work only on WordPress blogs hosted on your own domain and server at this time.

Can I add audio or video?

Currently, audio and video works only on PicLens Lite installed on websites. The audio on/off button on the PicLens Lite console is not yet functional with this plugin.

Why does WP PicLens require at least PHP verison 5?

PHP 5 supports libxml functions which the plugin uses to create the Media RSS feed. PHP 4 at the time of writing this plugin has reached its end of life and will no longer be supported by the PHP development team.

I got a Fatal PHP error when I activated the plugin, how do I fix it?

Make sure you are using php version 5, to remove the plugin, simply delete the wp-piclens folder.

Simple Flash Video

Description

The Simple Flash Video Plugin builds on the plugins that all ready allow easy posting of .flv or .mp4 files on the popular WordPress platform. Simple Flash Video allows for all of the JW FLV options to be utilized via its config.xml file and post level overrides. With this plugin you can easily post .flv or .mp4 videos to your blog and have your viewers instantly watch the video without having to fully download the video before watching. It also combines the popular Shadowbox utility to allow for the videos to float over the website content for a clean look. Additionally it now includes Simple Stats which allow for highly detailed information on the viewing of your videos that are hosted played on your site. SFV can also utilizes Longtail Video advertisement system which allows you to make money with your videos if you buy a licence for the player at Longtail Video Site This plugin was built from the ground up to take full advantage of the JW FLV Player and Shadowbox. Code has been used from the Flash Video Player by Joshua Eldridge as per the licence agreemnet. When you put the [video...] code in your plugin it will be replaced by a Link to the video that will open in a Shadowbox window. If a .jpg file is in the same directory with the same name as the flv it will also use that photo in the link. If no image is found it will simply place a Text link in your post. If you wish you can also disable the Shadowbox feature in the post command.

Installation

  1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  2. Configure the plugin as you desire via the options menu. Click save to keep the file.
  3. That’s it! You’re done. You can now enter the following into a post or page in WordPress to insert a video: [video filename=/video/video.flv /]
  4. After a while check the SFV Stats link on your admin home page to see the latest stats

Faq

I have activated the plugin, but don’t see the video player. What do I do?

Check and make sure that you have the appropriate hook in your template file for the header: <?php wp_head(); ?>

When Shadowbox opens the video I get a 404 page what is wrong?

Your web host has some security setttings that are preventing the video.php script from running. Email your support and they will usually approve the script and it will start running as expected.

How do I change a setting for a single post?

If you just want to change a single value for one video you can do it by modifying the code in your post. To Change the height you would simply put: [video filename=video/video.flv height=500 /] You can put any of the variables in this way using all lowercase variable names without spaces in the name.

Help! I can’t figure this out!?

No problem! Give us a shout using the contact form @ http://www.simplethoughtproductions.com/contact/ and we will see if we cant help you. We also recommend posting a comment on the version of Simple Flash Video player to allow the community to assist as well. Find the post for your version @ http://www.simplethoughtproductions.com/category/simple-flash-video/

Other Notes

Usage

To use the plugin simply put: [video filename=/path/to/file/whatever.flv /] into your blog post replacing the path with the real path to the file. You can add additional parameters to code to be passed onto the flash player as well as control the plugin. All player options are supported. You can also pass thickbox=off to turn off thick box and simply have the player show in the post. You can also set embed=true to use embed code instead of the SWFObject code.

Example of more advance usage:

[video filename=/path/to/file/whatever.flv thickbox=off embed=true width=400 height=320 /]

Any variable that the Longtail video player can use can be passed in through the command.

Arguments

While you can use any argument in your video command that is supported by JW FLV 4.4 there are also a few that only apply to SFV.

  • vid_image (http link to image) – use this to set a different image for the link
  • botr (true false) – use this to enable support for bits on the run. This is needed if you are using domain masking and have not defaulted to bits on the run in the config.
  • shadowbox (off on) – enables or disables shadowbox for the single video
  • click_title (words spaced by ) – this will allow you set a custom text below the image that is used for the video

When I try to activate the plugin I get the message : “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
This problem could happened if you have a low memorylimit in your php environment and a lot of plugins installed. For a simple test deactivate all other plugins and try then to activate Flash Album Gallery again.

I get the message “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” or get the “Error: Exceed Memory limit.”. What does this means ?
This problem could happened if you have a low memorylimit in your php environment or you have a very large image (resolution, not size). The memory limit sets the maximum amount of memory in bytes that a script is allowed to allocate. You can either lower the resolution of your images or increase the PHP Memory limit (via iniset, php.ini or htaccess). If you didn’t know how to do that, please contact your web hoster.

Share the video in more than 30 social services. Thanks to http://www.gigya.com

Other Notes

Why do I want video in my blog?
For example you run a blog about cooking. You watched a TV show about cooking and thought: “Hey! I can record video recipes as well!”. You’ve recorded how you cooked a lobster, now you google for video plugin for Wordpress. Fortunately, you found Bubblecast video plugin, it took you 2 minutes to register, install it and post the video. You briefly looked through plugin’s features and was struck by another idea: “Hey! My readers can post their video recipes to comment mine. We can create a library of video recipes. I can even make money on that if I gather enough video clips”.

By this example I want to make emphasis on publishing capabilities of Bubblecast, this is what brings the power of User Generated Content to your blog.

Although it sounds like blogging for commercial purpose you can also imagine that you post your home video to your personal blog and your friends comment it with their own video clips.

Why doesn’t the Flash recorder work with my Mac’s iSight webcam?
This is a problem with iSight/Flash and is not specific to Riffly’s recorder.

Riffly, will now auto-detect your iSight camera and select it for you, but just incase follow the below instructions:

Click the “Add Webcam Comment” link to bring up the Riffly recorder and then click “Allow”. Hold down the Control key and click with the mouse in the Flash recorder window. This will bring up the Flash menu, select “Settings…”. Then click on the camera tab at the bottom of that settings window. Select “USB Video Class Video” from the drop down list and it should begin to work.
