Description

This plugin manages the JW FLV MEDIA PLAYER 4.3 and makes it easy for you to put music, videos or flash movies onto your WordPress posts and pages. Various skins for the JW PLAYER are available via www.longtailvideo.com

wordTube supports the streaming video format (Format .flv or .swf), sound files as MP3 and JPG, GIF or PNG grafic files. With wordTube you can simply insert it into your blog with the tag [media id=”media id”] or as playlist [playlist id=”playlist id”].

Since Version 2.0 it supports LongTail’s AdSolution which allows you to run pre-roll, overlay mid-roll, and post-roll advertisements in your media player. Click here to sign up for LongTail

Role Scoper

October 30th, 2009 No comments

Table of contents

Description

Role Scoper is a comprehensive access control solution, giving you CMS-like control of reading and editing permissions. Assign restrictions and roles to specific pages, posts or categories.

How it works:

Your WordPress core role definitions remain unchanged, and continue to function as default permissions. User access is altered only as you expand it by assigning content-specific roles, or reduce it by setting content-specific restrictions.

Users of any level can be elevated to read or edit content of your choice. Restricted content can be withheld from users lacking a content-specific role, regardless of their WP role. Deactivation or removal of Role Scoper will return each user to their standard WordPress access (but all RS settings remain harmlessly in the database in case you change your mind).

Scoped role restrictions and assignments are reflected in every aspect of the WordPress interface, from front end content and navigation to administrative post and comment totals. Although Role Scoper provides extreme flexibility and powerful bulk administration forms, basic usage is just a set of user checkboxes in the Post/Page Edit Form.

Partial Feature List

  • Customize access for specific Pages, Posts, Categories
  • Assign roles to User Groups (or directly to user)
  • Control Read and/or Edit access
  • Pages and Category listing match modified access
  • Category post counts and tag cloud match modified access
  • Page and category listings maintain tree structure even if some branches are hidden
  • File Attachment filter blocks direct URL requests if user can’t read corresponding post/page
  • Customizable Hidden Content Teaser (or hide posts/pages completely)
  • Control which categories users can post to
  • Control which pages users can associate sub-pages to
  • Assign additional blog-wide, type-specific role(s) for any user
  • Can elevate Subscribers to edit desired content (ensures safe failure mode)
  • Inheritance of Restrictions and Roles to sub-categories / sub-pages
  • Default Restrictions and Roles for new content
  • Default Groups for new users
  • Un-editable posts/pages are excluded from the editing list
  • Specify element(s) in Edit Form to withhold from non-Editors
  • RSS Feed Filter with HTTP authentication option
  • Optimized to limit additional database queries
  • Inline descriptive captions for each of the extensive options and settings
  • Supports translation (contribute your own!)
  • Pending Revisions allow Contributors to suggest changes to a currently published post/page

For more information, see the Usage Guide or Support Forum.

Support

  • Most Bug Reports and Plugin Compatibility issues addressed promptly following your support forum submission.
  • Author is available for professional consulting to meet your configuration, troubleshooting and customization needs.

Installation

Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

Faq

How can I prevent low-level users from seeing the Roles/Restrictions menus and Edit boxes?

In your blog admin, navigate to Roles > Options. In the “Content Maintenance” section, set the option “Roles and Restrictions can be set” to “by blog-wide Editors and Administrators” or “by Administrators only”. Click the Update button.

How does Role Scoper compare to Role Manager or Capability Manager?

Role Scoper’s functionality is entirely different and complementary to RM and CM. RM/CM do little more than alter WordPress’ definition of the capabilities included in each role. That’s a valuable task, and in many cases will be all the role customization you need. Since RM/CM modifications are stored in the main WordPress database, they remain even if RM/CM is deactivated.

Role Scoper is useful when you want to customize access to specific content, not just blog-wide. It will work with the WP roles as a starting point, whether customized by RM/CM or not. To see how Role Scoper’s role definitions correlate to your WordPress roles, navigate to ‘Roles’ > ‘Options’ > ‘RS Role Definitions’ in your blog admin. Role Scoper’s modifications remain only while it stays active.

Why are there so many options? Do I really need Role Scoper?

It depends on what you’re trying to accomplish with your WordPress installation. Role Scoper is designed to be functionally comprehensive and flexible. Great pains were taken to maintain performance and user-friendliness. Yet there are simpler permission plugins out there, particularly if you only care about read access. Review Role Scoper’s feature list and decide what’s important to you.

Why doesn’t Role Scoper limit direct access to files that I’ve uploaded via FTP?

Role Scoper only filters files in the WP uploads folder (or a subfolder). The uploads folder must be a branch of the WordPress directory tree. The files must be formally attached to a post / page via the WordPress uploader or via the RS Attachments Utility.

In your blog admin, navigate to ‘Roles’ > ‘Options’ > ‘Features’ > ‘Attachments’ > ‘Attachments Utility’.

Where does Role Scoper store its settings? How can I completely remove it from my database?

Role Scoper creates and uses the following tables: groups_rs, user2group_rs, role_scope_rs, user2role2object_rs. All RS-specific options stored to the WordPress options table have an option name prefixed with “scoper_”.

Due to the potential damage incurred by accidental deletion, no automatic removal is currently available. You can use a SQL editing tool such as phpMyAdmin to drop the tables and delete the scoper options.

Podcast Channels

October 30th, 2009 No comments

Table of contents

Description

What do you need to podcast with Wordpress? Nothing — Wordpress puts enclosures in the feed for you. That’s the bare bones and it works well enough.

But iTunes metadata would be nice. And, how about different info in different categories? Podcast Channels lets you specify iTunes metadata for the home feed, specific category feeds, and even ‘user defined’ (‘Conditional’) feeds (see the FAQ).

Installation & Settings

Installation

  1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  2. Get going under ‘Media’ > ‘Podcast Channels’
  3. There are two extra fields in ‘Settings’ > ‘General’ for you to use too.

Settings

Setting up Category Channels

Go to the ‘Media’ > ‘Podcast Channels’ page to set up the Site Defaults. If you are not happy with the defaults shown in grey, click in the fields to set your own. If you want the main blog page feed to use this data, tick the ‘add to Home Feed’ option.

To add a podcast channel, choose a blog category from the drop-down menu and click ‘Add Category Channel’. When the new channel pops up, there is an ‘Add field…’ drop-down menu in it that lets you specify defaults for this channel that over-ride the site defaults.

Leave a field undefined/blank or the same as the default and it will be removed from the channel definition – which means the value reverts to the site default.

Fields that don’t inherit

Two fields are channel specific and do not inherit from the site defaults:

  1. ‘Feed Moving To’ is used to tell your podcast users (and the iTunes directory) that the podcast channel is moving to a new URL.
  2. ‘Feedburner URL’ redirects everyone (except the Feedburner site!) to a Feedurner URL so that they can collect stats for you.

Audio Files in the Media Library

When you upload an audio file, Podcast Channels adds ‘Artist’, ‘Duration’ and ‘Explicit’ fields to the Media Library. It initially fills in the artist and duration with the information found in the ID3 tags*, but you are free to edit the fields.

Remember to set the explicit flag to ‘Yes’ if the content is not suitable for children. Apple are likely to de-list your podcast from the iTunes directory if you do not.

(* This plugin comes complete with the getID3 PHP library in a sub-folder. The library can be found at http://www.getid3.org/.)

Copyright and Image

Podcast Channels adds image and copyright info to all your feeds if you specify it in the extra fields in ‘Settings’ > ‘General’ (see screenshots).

Faq

How do I add an audio file?

All you need do is have the full URL of an audio file in a post, and it will pop up as an enclosure, and consequently in the RSS feed to be downloaded by a podcast client. So just use WP’s usual uploader and Media Library — a link to the file will do. Or if you use the wpaudioplayer plugin, the [audio: xxxx] text in the post will work so long as xxxx is a full URL to an audio file.

Add Conditional Channel?

It seemed like a good idea at the time — a way to setup more generic channels than just by category. You can put in PHP and WP’s Conditional Tags here to make any kind of channel.

eg. is_tag('film') will make a channel in /tags/film/feed/

and is_author('alan') will make a channel in /author/alan/feed/

Kind of cool, but not well tested. Let me know if you find this useful. You can specify full PHP code, and when it ‘returns TRUE’, the channel data appears in the feed.

If you don’t use ‘return’ in the code, there is an implicit return added on the front and a terminating ‘;’ on the end. If you DO specify return, remember to put the final semi-colon in.

Faq

I installed the plugin, but installation failed after pressing Complete Installation, showing me a text in a red rectangle?
Cause: Either curl / curl functions is disabled on your server or your hosting blocks API calls to the Kaltura servers.

  • Solution 1: Enable curl and it’s functions on the server (or have the hosting company enable it for you).
  • Solution 2: Remove any blocking of external calls from the server.

I can’t activate the plugin, it presents an error message after clicking Activate on the plugin list
It might be caused due to an old version of PHP. The Kaltura wp plugin is written for PHP4 and PHP5 with the use of classes and static members, these are not supported on earlier versions of PHP. Upgrade to PHP5 / later. If upgrading doesn’t solve this issue or you already have PHP5 on your server, post the error information on the forum and we’ll help you. (http://community.kaltura.org/viewforum.php?f=4). Support for PHP4 was added on version 1.0

When I try to activate the plugin I get the message : “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”
This problem could happened if you have a low memorylimit in your php environment and a lot of plugins installed. For a simple test deactivate all other plugins and try then to activate Flash Album Gallery again.

I get the message “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” or get the “Error: Exceed Memory limit.”. What does this means ?
This problem could happened if you have a low memorylimit in your php environment or you have a very large image (resolution, not size). The memory limit sets the maximum amount of memory in bytes that a script is allowed to allocate. You can either lower the resolution of your images or increase the PHP Memory limit (via iniset, php.ini or htaccess). If you didn’t know how to do that, please contact your web hoster.

    Read as startup http://codeasily.com/wordpress-plugins/flash-album-gallery/flag-review/

When writing a page/post, you can use the follow shortcode:

    [album gid=x name=”Album_Name” w=width h=height] – (example: [album gid=1,3,5,6 name=”New Year 2009″ w=100% h=400] )

    Description

This plugin will manage and rotate your Google Adsense and other ads on your Wordpress blog. It automatically recognises many ad networks including Google Adsense, AdBrite, Adify, AdGridWork, Adpinion, Adroll, Chitika, Commission Junction, CrispAds, OpenX, ShoppingAds, Yahoo!PN, and WidgetBucks. Unsupported ad networks can be used as well.

    Features:

    • Import ad code automatically
    • Widgets and sidebar modules compatible (as used in the popular K2 theme).
    • Automatic limiting of ad display to meet network terms and conditions (e.g. Google Adsense 3 units/page)

    Premium Option

This addon is available as a subscription from our Products Page.

    Usage & Settings

    • Add your ad networks by clicking ‘Create new’ under the ‘Ads’ menu. Manage your ad networks by clicking ‘Edit’ under the ‘Ads’ menu.
    • Place ads in your blog posts and pages by adding ‘‘ to your blog post (where ‘name’ is the name of your ad)

More detailed installation instructions can be found here.

    Faq

I previously used the Adsense Manager plugin for Wordpress. Do I need to reconfigure my ads?
Advertising Manager will automatically import your settings from Adsense Manager. There is no modification necessary. In addition, Advertising Manager will accept the Adsense Manager ad calls (”) as well.

Does Advertising Manager support Wordpress MU (multi-user)?
    Yes.

Can Advertising Manager work in my language?
Yes. Advertising Manager is localised. If your blog is in another language, and Advertising Manager shows in English, then it is most likely that a translation has not been done. Don’t worry – if you are a native speaker in English as well as your local language, you can help out! Information on how to get involved can be found here:

    http://code.openx.org/wiki/advertising-manager/TranslateAdvertisingManagerinyour_language

Do I still need Advertising Manager now I can manage ads through Google’s system?
Advertising manager allows you to rotate ads, easily turn on/off ads, place them in your blog, and many features other than configuration of the ad colors and format. It a critical tool to use if you want to make more from your advertising.

Why does changing Ad Format/Dimensions sometimes not change the size of the ad?
For some ad networks (e.g. WidgetBucks, Adroll, etc.) the dimensions of ads are managed through the online interface. There is no way to change these settings from within the WordPress system that would work reliably. You do not have to update these dimension settings if you update your Ad online, however, it can be useful in correctly identifying ‘Alternate Ads’ for AdSense blocks.

How can I share revenue with my authors?

    1. Load YOUR ad into Advertising Manager.
    2. Load your AUTHOR’s ad into Advertising Manager.
    3. Name both ads the same – this will allow them to rotate.
    4. In your author’s ad, be sure to select the authors username in Display Options
    5. Set the weights of the ads according to your revenue share. The easiest way to do this is to set YOUR ad weight to 36, and then set the weight of your author’s ad according to the revenue share deal. For 10% revenue share, set the author ad weight to 4; 20% = 9; 33% = 18; 40% = 24; 50% = 36; 60% = 54; 66.7% = 72; 70% = 84; 80% = 144; 90% = 324. For the nerdy wonks out there, the formula is (AUTHOR AD WEIGHT) = (MY AD WEIGHT * REVENUE SHARE) / (1 – REVENUE SHARE)

    WordPress.com Stats

    September 9th, 2009 Comments off

    Table of contents

    Description

There are hundreds of plugins and services which can provide statistics about your visitors. However I found that even though something like Google Analytics provides an incredible depth of information, it can be overwhelming and doesn’t really highlight what’s most interesting to me as a writer. That’s why Automattic created its own stats system, to focus on just the most popular metrics a blogger wants to track and provide them in a clear and concise interface.

Installing this stats plugin is much like installing Akismet, all you need is to put in your API Key and the rest is automatic.

Once it’s running it’ll begin collecting information about your pageviews, which posts and pages are the most popular, where your traffic is coming from, and what people click on when they leave. It’ll also add a link to your dashboard which allows you to see all your stats on a single page. Less is more.

Finally, because all of the processing and collection runs on our servers and not yours, it doesn’t cause any additional load on your hosting account. In fact, it’s one of the fastest stats system, hosted or not hosted, that you can use.

    1. It will ask you to enter your WordPress.com API key, do so.
    2. Sit back and wait a few minutes for your stats to come rolling in.

    Faq

Can I keep using existing stat systems like Mint, Google Analytics, and Statcounter?
Of course, nothing we do conflicts with any of those systems. We’re just (hopefully) faster.

How long before I start seeing stats?
It may take as long as 20 minutes the first time you use it. After that they should update every 3 minutes or so.

Does it count my own hits?
It does not count the hits of logged in users.

What if the stats don’t start showing up? Do I need anything special in my theme?
Yes, your theme must have a call to at the very bottom right before the tag.

    Can I hide the smiley?
Sure, just use display:none. Try this code in your stylesheet:
    img#wpstats{display:none}

    Is it compatible with WP-Cache?
The plugin collects stats via a javascript call, so as long as the JS call is on the page stats will be collected just fine, whether the page is cached or not.

Can I use the same API key on multiple blogs?
Just like with Akismet, you’re welcome to use the same API key on multiple blogs. In fact our interface is optimized for quickly switching between stats for multiple blogs.

    WP-SpamFree Anti-Spam

    Table of contents

    Description

An extremely powerful WordPress anti-spam plugin that eliminates blog comment spam, including trackback and pingback spam. Finally, you can enjoy a spam-free WordPress blog! Includes spam-free contact form feature as well.

A Powerful Weapon Against Comment Spam
Comment spam has been a huge problem for bloggers since the inception of blogs, and it just doesn’t seem to go away. The worst kind, and most prolific, is automated spam that comes from bots. Well, finally there is an anti-spam plugin for WordPress that provides an effective solution, without CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions, or other inconvenience to site visitors. WP-SpamFree eliminates automated blog comment spam from bots, including trackback and pingback spam.

    New Features

    • Now with Enhanced Comment Blacklist option! Instead of just sending comments to moderation as with WordPress’s default Comment Blacklist functionality, with this turned on, anything that matchs a string in the blacklist will be completely blocked. Also adds a link in the comment notification emails that will let you blacklist a commenter’s IP with one click.
    • See what’s been blocked! Version 2.0 adds “Blocked Comment Logging Mode”, a temporary diagnostic mode that logs blocked comments and contact form submissions for 7 days, then turns off automatically. If you want to see what’s been blocked, or verify that everything is working, turn this on and see what WP-SpamFree is protecting your blog from.
    • Added option for smaller graphic counters to display spam stats, in addition to the existing normal-sized ones.
    • Added Widget for displaying spam counter. Shows small counter #1. Now you can show stats without knowing any code.

    Key Features

    1. Virtually eliminates automated comment spam from bots. It works like a firewall to ensure that your commenters are in fact, human.
    2. A counter on your dashboard to keep track of all the spam it’s blocking. The numbers will show how effective this plugin is.
    3. No CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions or other inconvenience to site visitors – it works silently in the background.
    4. Includes drop-in spam-free contact form. Easy to use – no configuration necessary.
    5. No false positives, which leads to fewer frustrated readers, and less work for you.
    6. You won’t have to waste valuable time sifting through a spam queue anymore, because there won’t be much there, if anything.
    7. Powerful trackback and pingback spam protection.
    8. Easy to install – truly plug and play. Just upload and activate. (Installation Status on the plugin admin page to let you know if plugin is installed correctly.)
The beauty of this plugin is the methods of blocking spam. It takes a different approach than most and stops spam at the door.
    9. The code has an extremely low bandwidth overhead and won’t slow down your blog (very light database access), unlike some other anti-spam plugins.
Completely compatible with all cache plugins, including WP Cache and WP Super Cache. Not all anti-spam plugins can say that.
    10. Display your blocked spam stats on your blog.
    11. Helps keep your database slimmer and more efficient.
    12. Works in WordPress MU as well.
    13. No cost, no hidden fees. Free for both Commercial and Personal use.

    Background
Before I developed this plugin, our team and clients experienced the same frustration you do with comment spam on your WordPress blog. Every blog we manage had comment moderation enabled and various other anti-spam plugins installed, but we still had a ton of comments tagged as spam in the spam queue that we had to sort through. This wasted a lot of valuable time, and we all know, time is money. We needed a solution.

Comment spam stems from an older problem – automated spamming of email contact forms on web sites. I developed a successful fix for this a while ago, and later applied it to our WordPress blogs. It was so effective, that I decided to add a few modifications and turn it into a WordPress plugin to be freely distributed. Blogs we manage used to get an excessive number of spam comments show up on the spam queue each day – now the daily average is zero spam comments.

To further the development of this anti-spam plugin, I now study thousands and thousands of potential spam comments from many test blogs and contributors. I use a special diagnostic version of the plugin, which provides much more information on each of these spam comments than what is shown in WordPress. By analyzing patterns and behaviors consistent with spam, I can continually improve the plugin and ensure future accuracy.

    How It Works
Most of the spam hitting your blog originates from bots. Few bots can process JavaScript (JS). Few bots can process cookies. Fewer still, can handle both. In a nutshell, this plugin uses a dynamic combo of JavaScript and cookies to weed out the humans from spambots, preventing 99%+ of automated spam from ever getting to your site. Almost 100% of web site visitors will have these turned on by default, so this type of solution works silently in the background, with no inconveniences. There may be a few users (less than 2%) that have JavaScript and/or cookies turned off by default, but they will be prompted to simply turn those back on to post their comment. Overall, the few might be inconvenienced because they have JS and cookies turned off will be far fewer than the 100% who would be annoyed by CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions, and other validation methods.

Some would argue that using JS and cookies is too simplistic an approach. Traditionally, programmers prefer using some type of basic AI to fight bots by trying to figure out if a comment is spam. While that isn’t a bad idea, when used alone this method falls short because no machine AI can ever accurately judge whether a comment is spam – many spam comments get through that could easily have been stopped, and there are many false positives where non-spam comments get flagged as spam. Others may argue that some spammers have programmed their bots to read JavaScript, etc. In reality, the percentage of bots with these capabilities is still extremely low – less than 1%. It’s simply a numbers game. Statistics tell us that an effective solution would involve using a technology that few bots can handle, therefore eliminating their ability to spam your site. The important thing in fighting spam is that we create a solution that can reduce spam noticeably and improve the user experience, and a 99%+ reduction in spam would definitely make a difference for most bloggers and site visitors.

Even so, it’s important to know that the particular JS and cookies solution used in the WP-SpamFree anti-spam plugin has evolved quite a bit, and is no longer simple at all. There are now two layers of protection, a JavaScript/Cookies Layer, and an Algorithmic Layer. Even if bot authors could engineer a way to break through the JavaScript/Cookies Layer, the Algorithmic Layer would still stop 95% of the spam that the JavaScript Layer blocks. (I’m working to make this 100% for fully redundant protection.) This JavaScript Layer utilizes randomly generated keys, and is algorithmically enhanced to ensure that spambots won’t beat it. The powerful Algorithmic Layer is what eliminates trackback/pingback spam, and much human spam as well. And, it does all that without hindering legitimate comments and trackbacks. The bottom line, is that this plugin just plain works, and is a powerful weapon against spam.

    WordPress Blogging Without Spam
How does it feel to blog without being bombarded by comment spam? If you’re happy with the WP-SpamFree WordPress anti-spam plugin, please let others know by giving it a good rating!

    Settings & Usage

    1. Check to make sure the plugin is installed properly. Many support requests for this plugin originate from improper installation and can be easily prevented. To check proper installation status, go to the WP-SpamFree page in your Admin. It’s a submenu link on the Plugins page. Go the the ‘Installation Status’ area near the top and it will tell you if the plugin is installed correctly. If it tells you that the plugin is not installed correctly, please double-check what directory you have installed WP-SpamFree in, delete any WP-SpamFree files you have uploaded to your server, re-read the Installation Instructions, and start the Installation process over from step 1. If it is installed correctly, then move on to the next step. contact Support immediately.
    2. Select desired configuration options. Due to popular request, I’ve added the option to block trackbacks and pingbacks if the user feels they are excessive. I’d recommend not doing this, but the choice is yours.
    3. If you are using front-end anti-spam plugins (CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions, etc), be sure they are disabled since there’s no longer a need for them, and these could likely conflict. (Back-end anti-spam plugins like Akismet are fine, although unnecessary.)

You’re done! Sit back and see what it feels like to live without comment spam!

    For Best Results
WP-SpamFree was created specifically to stop automated comment spam (which accounts for over 99% of comment spam), and recently we have added some features that help combat human comment spam, as well as trackback/pingback spam. Unfortunately, no plugin can perfectly detect human comment spam. As other experts will tell you, the most effective strategy for blocking spam involves applying a variety of techniques. For best results, enable comment moderation, and if you desire a backup, feel free to use Akismet (even though unnecessary), as the two plugins are compatible.

    Displaying Stats on Your Blog
Want to show off your spam stats on your blog and tell others about WP-SpamFree? Simply use the widget. It displays stats in the style of small counter #1. Now you can show spam stats on your blog without knowing any code.

Adding a Contact Form to Your Blog
First create a page (not post) where you want to have your contact form. Then, insert the following tag (using the HTML editing tab, NOT the Visual editor) and you’re done: <!–spamfree-contact–>

There is no need to configure the form. It allows you to simply drop it into the page you want to install it on. However, there are a few basic configuration options. You can choose whether or not to include Phone and Website fields, whether they should be required, add a drop down menu with up to 10 options, set the width and height of the Message box, set the minimum message length, set the form recipient, enter a custom message to be displayed upon successful contact form submission, and choose whether or not to include user technical data in the email.

If you want to modify the style of the form using CSS, all the form elements have an ID attribute you can reference in your stylesheet.

What the Contact Form feature IS: A simple drop-in contact form that won’t get spammed.

What the Contact Form feature is NOT: A configurable and full-featured plugin like some other contact form plugins out there.

Note: Please do not request new features for the contact form, as the main focus of the plugin is spam protection. Thank you.

    Configuration Information
    Spam Options<

M2 – Use two methods to set cookies. This adds a secondary non-JavaScript method to set cookies in addition to the standard JS method.

Blocked Comment Logging Mode This is a temporary diagnostic mode that logs blocked comment submissions for 7 days, then turns off automatically. If you want to see what spam has been blocked on your site, this is the option to use. Also, if you experience any technical issues, this will help with diagnosis, as you can email this log file to support if necessary. If you suspect you are having a technical issue, please turn this on right away and start logging data. Then submit a support request, and we’ll email you back asking to see the log file so we can help you fix whatever the issue may be. The log is cleared each time this feature is turned on, so make sure you download the file before turning it back on. Also the log is capped at 2MB for security. This feature may use slightly higher server resources, so for best performance, only use when necessary. (Most websites won’t notice any difference.)

Log All Comments Requires that Blocked Comment Logging Mode be engaged. Instead of only logging blocked comments, this will allow the log to capture all comments while logging mode is turned on. This provides more technical data for comment submissions than WordPress provides, and helps us improve the plugin. If you plan on submitting spam samples to us for analysis, it’s helpful for you to turn this on, otherwise it’s not necessary. If you have any spam comments that you feel WP-SpamFree should have blocked (usually human spam), then please submit a support request. When we email you back we will ask you to forward the data to us by email.

This extra data will be extremely valuable in helping us improve the spam protection capabilites of the plugin.

Disable trackbacks. Use if trackback spam is excessive. It is recomended that you don’t use this option unless you are experiencing an extreme spam attack.

Disable pingbacks. Use if pingback spam is excessive. The disadvantage is a reduction of communication between blogs. When blogs ping each other, it’s like saying “Hi, I just wrote about you” and disabling these pingbacks eliminates that ability. It is recomended that you don’t use this option unless you are experiencing an extreme spam attack.

Help promote WP-SpamFree? This places a small link under the comments and contact form, letting others know what’s blocking spam on your blog. This plugin is provided for free, so this is much appreciated. It’s a small way you can give back and let others know about WP-SpamFree.

Contact Form Options These are self-explanatory.

    Other Notes

Troubleshooting Guide | WP-SpamFree Support Page

    Troubleshooting Guide / Support
If you’re having trouble getting things to work after installing the plugin, here are a few things to check:

    1. Check the FAQ’s.
    2. If you haven’t yet, please upgrade to the latest version. We ensure that our plugins are always up to date.
    3. If it tells you that the plugin is not installed correctly, please double-check what directory you have installed WP-SpamFree in, delete any WP-SpamFree files you have uploaded to your server, re-read the Installation Instructions, and start the Installation process over from step 1. please contact Support immediately.
    4. Clear your browser’s cache, clear your cookies, and restart your browser. Then reload the page.
    5. If you are receiving the error message: “Sorry, there was an error. Please enable JavaScript and Cookies in your browser and try again.” then you need to make sure JavaScript and cookies are enabled in your browser. (JavaScript is different from Java. Java is not required.) These are enabled by default in web browsers. The status display will let you know if these are turned on or off (as best the page can detect – occasionally the detection does not work.) If this message comes up consistently even after JavaScript and cookies are enabled, then there most likely is an installation problem, plugin conflict, or JavaScript conflict. Read on for possible solutions.
    6. If you have multiple domains that resolve to the same server, or are parked on the same hosting account, make sure the domain set in the WordPress configuration options matches the domain where you are accessing the blog from. In other words, if you have people going to your blog using www.yourdomain.com/ and the WordPress configuration has: www.yourdomain2.com/ you will have a problem (not just with this plugin, but with a lot of things.)
    7. Check your WordPress Version. If you are using a release earlier than 2.3, you may want to upgrade for a whole slew of reasons, including features and security.
    8. Check the options you have selected to make sure they are not disabling a feature you want to use.
    9. Make sure that you are not using other front-end anti-spam plugins (CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions, etc) since there’s no longer a need for them, and these could likely conflict. (Back-end anti-spam plugins like Akismet are fine, although unnecessary.)
    10. Check for conflicts with other JavaScripts installed on your site. This usually occurs with with JavaScripts unrelated to WordPress or plugins. However some themes contain JavaScripts that aren’t compatible. (And some don’t have the call to the wp_head() function which is also a problem. Read on to see how to test/fix this issue.) If in doubt, try switching themes. If that fixes it, then you know the theme was at fault. If you discover a conflicting theme, please let us know.
    11. Check for conflicts with other WordPress plugins installed on your blog. Although errors don’t occur often, this is one of the most common causes of the errors that do occur. I can’t guarantee how well-written other plugins will be. First, see the Known Plugin Conflicts list. If you’ve disabled any plugins on that list and still have a problem, then proceed. To start testing for conflicts, temporarily deactivate all other plugins except WP-SpamFree. Then check to see if WP-SpamFree works by itself. (For best results make sure you are logged out and clear your cookies. Alternatively you can use another browser for testing.) If WP-SpamFree allows you to post a comment with no errors, then you know there is a plugin conflict. The next step is to activate each plugin, one at a time, log out, and try to post a comment. Then log in, deactivate that plugin, and repeat with the next plugin. (If possible, use a second browser to make it easier. Then you don’t have to keep logging in and out with the first browser.) Be sure to clear cookies between attempts (before loading the page you want to comment on). If you do identify a plugin that conflicts, please let me know so I can work on bridging the compatibility issues.
    12. Make sure the theme you are using has the call to wp_head() (which most properly coded themes do) usually found in the header.php file. It will be located somewhere before the tag. If not, you can insert it before the tag and save the file. If you’ve never edited a theme before, proceed at your own risk: In the WordPress admin, go to Themes (Appearance) – Theme Editor; Click on Header (or header.php); Locate the line with and insert before it.
    13. On the WP-SpamFree Options page in the WordPress Admin, under “General Options”, check the option “M2 – Use two methods to set cookies.” and see if this helps.
    14. If have checked all of these, and still can’t quite get it working, please submit a support request at the WP-SpamFree Support Page.

    Description

Read the whole idea behind the concept here <a hred="http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/presenting-seo-super-comments-concept"Seo Super Comments Concept

For each user comment we will create a new dynamic page on the blog, holding the actual comment information. This page will not actually exist in WordPress database, but we will create it dynamically using a WordPress plugin.

What we instantly get in this way is big jump in site’s index visible to search engines. This is possible because blog comments are crawl-able, index-able and most importantly rank-able content. Also meaning you will start to get search engine traffic for the context of the comment.

The old author link in the comments will now lead to the newly generated page. Author’s URL will still be displayed (and we can do-follow it now as it will be only one external link on the page).

The concept relies around optimizing the target page using title and H1 tag using the context of the comment. So basically we will take the excerpt of the comment and use it to create the page title and H1 tag and in the body we will old the content of the comment (plus some more goodies, read on).

Since now all comments normally drain page rank even when nofollowed (bad for your site) the whole idea of using them to generate links back to your site instead and get free indexable content along the way, looks just much more appealing.

To spice things up, the dynamic comment page concept additionally features:

    • List of author’s other comments on the post are presented (good value for the visitor, more content)
    • List of author’s other comments on the blog (even more content, chance to interlink to your other posts, more value to the visitor)
    • Author url links are do-followed (option, but why not?)
    • Extra few clicks generated will increase your pageviews, lower the bounce rate and increase any CPM advertsing revenue
    • I have also created a mod for hugely popular XML sitemaps plugin to include all the new dynamic comment pages into your sitemap, so that the search engines can index the pages more quickly.

From version 2.0 Smart youtube also supports playback of high quality videos, works on iPhone, produces xHTML valid code (unlike YouTUbe embed code), allows you to view videos in fullscreen and most recently supports YouTube playlists.

The plugin is designed to be small and fast and not use any external resources. It has a number of customizable options.

    Main Features:

    • Easily embeds YouTube videos
    • Embed YouTube playlist
    • Supports latest high quality video protocols (360p and HD quality 720p)
    • Allows full YouTube customization (colors, border, full screen…)
    • Supports video deep linking (starting at desired point with &start=time parameter)
    • Works on iPod and iPhone
    • Supports migrated blogs from Wordpress.com replacing [youtube=youtubeadresss]
    • Provides a sidebar widget for videos as well
    • Produces xHTML valid code
    • Very fast and light, no extra scripts needed

    Settings

Configure the plugin from “Settings” menu from your Dashboard.

    Usage

When you want to display Youtube video in your post, copy the video URL to your post and change http:// to httpv:// (notice the ‘v’ character)

The video will be automatically embedded to your post in the proper way.

    Example: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWfksMD4PAg

If you want to post a high quality video (check if the video exists first!) you would use httpvh:// (‘vh’ for video high) If you want to post a HD (DVD quality, 720p) quality video you would use httpvhd:// (‘vhd’ for video high definition)

To embed a playlist use extension ‘vp’
    Example: httpvp://www.youtube.com/viewplaylist?p=528026B4F7B34094

Additionally, you can set how do you want the video to be displayed in your RSS feed. Smart Youtube can show the preview image of the video (automatically grabbed from Youtube), the link to the video, or both. I recommend enabling only the preview image.

How do I correctly use this plugin?
Copy the URL of YouTube video you want to watch. Paste it in your post anywhere.
    Example: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWfksMD4PAg

The plugin still does not show up a video!
Make sure you copied the URL as text, do not create a link!

    Javascript to Footer

    September 3rd, 2009 Comments off

    Table of contents

    Description

The Yahoo! Exceptional Performance team recommends placing scripts at the bottom of your page because of the way browsers download components.

“The problem caused by scripts is that they block parallel downloads. The HTTP/1.1 specification suggests that browsers download no more than two components in parallel per hostname. If you serve your images from multiple hostnames, you can get more than two downloads to occur in parallel. While a script is downloading, however, the browser won’t start any other downloads, even on different hostnames.

In some situations it’s not easy to move scripts to the bottom. If, for example, the script uses document.write to insert part of the page’s content, it can’t be moved lower in the page. There might also be scoping issues. In many cases, there are ways to workaround these situations.”

WordPress default behavior is to load javascript in the page.

This plugin will move all javascript code to the footer if the plugins have declared javascript properly.

    Caution

Try your blog and check if all plugins work properly. Footer JavaScript may break some plugins so check everything first!

How do I correctly use this plugin?
Just enable the plugin and check your blog pages. If all plugins appear to be working correctly you are set!

Additionally you may install YSlow enchancment for Firebug, a popular addon for Firefox browser. YSlow will help you determine your site choke points.

    Faster Image Insert

    Description

Faster Image Insert aims to do one thing right:

Moves built-in Media Manager down in a meta-box, right next to main editing panel, so you have full control of the manager: opens it, makes it collapse or hidden from the interface completely.

Best of all, is now you can insert image(s) much faster, and precisely where you want them to be.

    • No thickbox, using metabox with zero interface blocking, quite similar to the uploader in WordPress 1.5
    • No hacking, default upload interface is not affected, only enhanced.
    • Insert multiple images in gallery & library mode, without using shortcode; can also insert images in reversed order, and even control spacing between images.
    • Mass info editing, change title/captions in one-shot.
    • Smart switches: set default uploader, disable captions & toggle all items.
    • Initial load time is still limited by server, because the default media manager is not fully client-sided.

    This plugin is designed for:

    • Screenshot lovers – movie, game or anime reviews etc.
    • Howto gurus – cooking guide, hardware DIY guide etc.
    • Photo loggers – author can comment below each photos.
    • Bloggers that have been shouting “run, manager, RUN!” to their thickbox loading screens.

    Usage

    • (Optional) Change options in “Settings” menu
    • Navigate to post/page editing panel, a Fast Insert metabox should appear

    Faq

Does the media manager behaves the same in meta-box ?
Yes, except less annoying (I hope).

Would you mind slowing down releases ?
Fine, this version should be good for a while, until new bugs show-up ;-)

Why my items’ ordering are not saved ?
Remember to press “save all changes” button after re-ordering images. “Insert selected images” only outputs in listing order, NOT by ordering numbers.

Why reversed ordering starts with the number 500 ?
It’s just a number, I figure 500 should be enough for everyone; but you’re free to change it. Note that ordering number can be negative, you may use drag-and-drop to set them back to positive numbers.

Why doesn’t media manager load ?
Navigate to its options page, Try setting it to use html-based iframe, that should resolve the problem; otherwise you should look into possible plugin conflicts.

Conflicts with Custom Field Template plugin ?
One way to workaround this problem is to enable the multiple image insert option in CFT’s settings page. If you don’t feel like hacking wordpress core, media-manager popup within CPT meta-box will cease to load, but other function should work as usual.

Conflicts with Admin Drop Down Menu plugin ?
Schedule and Farbtastic libraries in wordpress can NOT live next to each other. Unfortunely, they met in the add new post section via these two plugins, which rendered the page as blank. One workaround is to uncomment the line on wpderegisterscript(‘farbtastic’) in faster-image-insert.php, it resolves the problem between two plugins, but also disable any color pickers.

Check NextGEN FlashViewer for another add-on for your NextGEN Gallery.

    Usage

    1. Go to Gallery->ImageFlow and change the options to your liking
    2. Go to your post and enter the tag [imageflow id=”GALLERY-ID”]

    That’s it … enjoy!

    Faq

I installed everything, but I don’t see any images. What am I doing wrong?
Check if you have uploaded reflect.php to your Wordpress root folder (the directory where your wp-config.php file is in). We’ve already done this for you.

    Anything else I should know?
Well, now you can use a reflection with any image on your blog that is not part of your NextGEN Gallery. Instead of referencing the URL of your image you can now write something like this: src=”path/to/WP-root-folder/reflect2.php?img=relative/path/to/image.jpg&bgc=ffffff” src=”http://blueorbs.com/reflect2.php?img=relative/path/to/image.jpg&bgc=ffffff”.
